Dependent filters combine multiple dashboard filters into a hierarchy of filters, where each filter shows only the options relevant to its parent filters. When you filter the parent filter, fewer options will be available in the child filter.
Who can do this? Dashboard Designers.
Example use case
The following example shows how a dependent filter helps you easily narrow down the information in a dashboard.
Let's say we have a dashboard showing all the data for our platform site. However, we want to see only the data from Full Contributors, within a specific community, who contributed to certain Challenges. To narrow down the results, we can create a dependent filter.
This dependent filter is comprised of two sub-dependent filters defined with the following hierarchy:
-
Role: Displays a list of roles used on the platform site. In this example, we’ve selected only the “Full Contributor” role.
-
Community Name: Displays a list of communities within the platform site based on their names. Because we only want to see data from a single community, we’ve selected the “Operational Excellence” community.
-
Challenge Name: Because “Operational Excellence” was selected, only Challenges within that community are displayed in the child filter. In this example, we’ve selected two of the Challenges.
Note: The options available in the child filter will be narrowed down since you’ve created a parent filter. You can identify a child filter by the down arrow indicating the parent filter and its dependent filter below.
Create a dependent filter
-
Go to your dashboard.
-
Create a new filter that you’ll use as your top-level (most inclusive) filter.
-
On the parent filter, click the Three dots and then select Add a Dependent Filter.
-
Define the child filter as you would a normal filter.
-
Repeat step 4 for each new child filter to create as many sub-levels of dependent filters as you need.
Once you’ve added all your filters, the data within your dashboard should be narrowed down based on the dependent filters.
Tip: If you want to define which of the fields in a filter will be visible to Viewers or reduce the amount of filtering they need to do, you can also create a background filter.
