This article details various configuration options available when setting up a new challenge. These options are all available via the General>Challenge configuration tab in challenge builder. They are in the right hand panel. Screenshot below:
Open all stages together
When enabled this allows ideas to move through stages at any point in the challenge rather than wait for the next stage to open. This is ideal for an always-on style challenge.
When this setting is disabled, stages are open one at a time and a stage has to be opened before ideas can be moved in to it. It creates a stage-gated challenge, useful for running a competition style challenge.
This setting is ON by default.
Allow Ideas to be fast tracked
When enabled this setting allows you to fast-track and ideas to a later stage in the Challenge workflow, skipping any previous stages. Sometimes an Idea is the perfect solution and there is no need to move it through each stage so you can send it straight to the final stage of a challenge, for example.
This setting is OFF by default.
Allow Ideas to be sent back
When enabled this setting allows you to send an Idea back to an earlier stage in the Challenge workflow. Perfect if you realise you need more refinement on an idea and want to send it back for development.
This setting is OFF by default.
Enable blind evaluation
Blind Evaluation allows Challenge Managers to elect to hide evaluation submissions from evaluators, even after they submit their own evaluation to prevent bias in the evaluation. See our support article on Blind Evaluation.
This setting is OFF by default.
Publish message to Status Update ON
When enabled any message entered in progression decision modals is always shared on the Status Updates tab of an idea. The setting below which appears on progression modals will be enabled by default.
This setting is ON by default.
Make Feedback required to make a progression decision
When this setting is enabled decision makers must provide feedback when making a progression decision. This is to encourage decision makers to provide creators and teams with feedback on progression decisions (whether positive or negative).
Progression decision makers comprise the following roles:
- Challenge Managers (and admins acting as the Challenge Manager)
- Idea Managers
- Lead Evaluators
This setting is ON by default.
Display the challenge workflow on the Challenge and Ideas
When enabled the challenge workflow can be viewed at the top of the challenge page and idea pages.
This setting is ON by default.

Require Lead Evaluator to submit evaluation
Without selecting this option, when an idea moves into a stage with evaluation enabled, the Lead Evaluator immediately receives two tasks and can complete the second one without completing the first task.
- Submit evaluation to complete the evaluation form.
- Submit decision to make a progression decision for the idea.
If you wish to encourage transparency and the proper evaluation of ideas, this configuration will require the Lead Evaluator to submit an evaluation before making the evaluation decision. If this option is enabled:
-
- When idea moves into the stage where evaluation is enabled, the Lead Evaluator receives only the first task (submit evaluation) and the Submit Decision option is not available on the evaluation tab on the idea or Challenge.
- Once the Lead Evaluator submits their evaluation, they receive the second task (Submit decision) and the Submit Decision option is enabled for them on evaluation tab on the idea and Challenge.
To ensure ideas do not get stuck in evaluation, a Challenge Manager, Community Admin or Site Admin will always have the ability to make a decision from either the Ideas or Evaluation tabs on the Challenge.
